Apple Turkey Burgers with Caramelized Onions

Cooks in 35 Minutes Difficulty Easy

These are so tasty and are SO easy! They are a nice, lighter alternative to regular beef burgers, but still have so much flavor and will fulfill that craving for a nice juicy burger. I first started making these in the fall because I had an abundance of apples, but they are awesome all year round! Just like a lot of my recipes, these are easily adaptable based on your likes or if you have something on hand you want to use. You can make these your own!

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, cut into slices

  • 2-3 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 pound ground turkey

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 a shallot, chopped

  • 3/4 an apple, any variety, chopped

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp pepper

  • 1 tbsp garlic, chopped

  • 1 tsp lemon zest

  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning

  • 1/2 tsp cumin

  • 1 tbsp Worcestshire sauce

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 big handful arugula, chopped

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 4 hamburger buns, any variety

  • 4 slices of cheese, any variety

  • arugula for topping (optional)

  • condiment of choice (ketchup, mayo, aioli, etc)

Directions

  • To caramelize onions: heat oil over low heat in skillet. Place onion slices in skillet, season with salt and pepper, and sugar. Simmer on low for 30-40 minutes until onions are nicely browned and caramelized.
  • Heat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Meanwhile mix next 13 ingredients together in large bowl. Form into 4 patties. Heat olive oil in an oven safe skillet (like a cast iron) and sear patties on each side for about 7 minutes. Finish cooking in the oven until internal temp reaches about 160. Once to temp, take skillet out of oven and place 4 slices of cheese on top, bake for another 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted.
  • Top bottom bun with arugula, then burger, then caramelized onions. Drizzle whichever condiment you choose on the inside of the top burger bun.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • My grocery store bakery section has an awesome variety of burger buns so I usually use one of those and this one is onion! Feel free to use whatever kind of buns you like! I also toasted the buns with a bit of butter before topping them.
  • I used pepper jack cheese this time, but have also used swiss – feel free to use whatever cheese you like!
  • For condiments, I used a garlic aioli, but feel free to use whatever is your fav!
  • I love serving these burgers with sweet potato fries made in the air fryer!
